Endomondo an andriod app to boost your fitness!

June 20, 2012

Endmondo is a great app to keep fit. The best thing with endomondo is that it easy to use. It has a screen which gives a clear overview of the current workout. Another screen gives a clear overview of the last performed work outs. The application has an Audio Coach which gives you a pep talk by giving you information on your lap time and total time on regular intervals such as every kilometer. Furthermore you can connect bluetooth accessories such as a polar heart rate monitor and let endomondo record your beat during workouts.

The PRO version also gives more detailed information on your workout such as altitude and speed graphs. Furthermore you can connect with your Facebook friends and see their workouts in the friends tab of the application. Another good thing about endomondo is that can calculate calorie usage for quite a few exercise activities compared to many other tracker applications.

How to program a simple andriod application that converts kilo calories to kilo joules

April 25, 2012

I decided to learn some android programming and therefore I decided to code a small android application which converts a given amount of energy from kilocalories to kilojoules and from kilocalories to kilojoules. I chose to code such an app since I’m trying to get fit for the summer and record what I eat into shapeup club. I usually think about calorie intake in terms of kilojoules but the shapeub club only accepts kilocalories. So therefore I figure out how many kilojoules I’ve taken in and use this app to find out how man kilocalories I should add in the shapeup club app. The application itself is quite simple it has to buttons which starts two functions that perform conversions. The result of a function calls is recorded on one of the programs to result fields. The result field is a simple textview control which is updated with the settext() method.

Durrocomm Andriod – a truly rugged andriod handset!

April 10, 2012

While browsing the web I found a truly rugged handset called Durrocom Andriod. It is military certified which means that it withstands shocks and vibrations better than those phones which are only waterproof such as the Motorola Defy or Sony Ericsson Xperia Active. Except the military certification it also has an IP67 certification which means it can withstand being submerged in 1 metre of water up to 30minutes.  It measures 125 x 65 x 21 mm. It weighs in at 180g. It has a talk time of 5.5hrs and a standby time of 400hrs. It has 3G, WCDMA, Quadband GSM. It runs andriod 2.3. It has a capacitive screen and 5MP camera. It also features a torch, gps and a compass. Furthermore the phone is able to handle dual sim cards so you can use it both for work and play.

You can also check out Durrocomms homepage.

ShapeUp Club and BodyMonitor, two andriod apps to help you to stay fit!

March 25, 2012

I’ve found two android apps which help you stay fit. The first is called ShapeUp Club and the second is called Body Monitor.
Shape Up Club is a calorie counter which helps you keep track of how many calories you take in and consume everyday. The application has
a database of more than four hundred thousand food items, so you can find a lot of thing which you might eat in this database. You can enter
your intake and consumption of calories within the application. The consumption of calories is calculated by entering what type of workout you have done and for
how many minutes or hours you worked out. How many calories you consumed during that workout, It’s especially suitable for smartphones since you can find different kinds of food
by pointing and touching instead of entering data with the touch keyboard. It can also tack your weight, body fat and measurements. The application can
give you a summary of the number of calories you’ve consumed during the last 30 days. This summary contains an average amount of calories which you’ve consumed
during each week. The software can graph your measurements, your weight and body fat. The graphs are very informative and easy to read.

Body monitor is an application to monitor your body fat, weights and measurements. One of the best features of this software is that it graphs your weight, body fat or measurements
during the last 30 days, You can check the graph to see if the trend i it’s going up or down. The software has a calendar view where you can enter
your weight, height, body fat and so on for each day. It let’s you track the fitness of several users so your entire family can use it! Graphs can be exported to
and SD card and weight and other fitness can also be exported to your SD card in a format that is readable by common spreadsheet applications such as Excel.*

An interesting andriod based doro smartphone aimed at senior citizens

March 20, 2012

The phone is clamshell phone and it has both a touch screen and number pad with navigation  buttons. It runs a user interface especially adopted for senior citizens on top of andriod. Unfortunately users are not able to access andriod market but are limited to a special application market from Doro. Not being able to access andriod market kind of cripples the whole concept of an andriod phone because the numbers of apps users are able to install are very limited. Only apps approved by Doro to work on the phone can be installed. There is a web portal where you can change the settings of the phone in case a senior citizen needs help from a technically able person.

When I’ve worked with senior citizens I’ve noticed their need for products that are simple too use and meets their need for better ergonomics such as larger text and slower moving cursors. I think this product will be a hit among seniors.

Why are there not more andriod apps which work on ofline mode?

January 26, 2012

I live in Sweden which is a sparsely populated country this fact contributes to the fact that there’s not always cellular coverage in Sweden especially in the countryside. It’s a problem that many andriod apps rely on having Internet access. It is important to design apps to work offline with as many features as possible to make it usable offline. Off line apps also works better in developing countries and emergency situations when there’s a limited supply of power and might be problems with cellular coverage.

I think andriod market and governmental agencies which deal with telecommunications should encourage andriod developers to make more apps which works offline.
